Acupuncture is part of a system of healing that
has existed in China for thousands of years. The history of medicine
in China is well documented and remarkably unchanged in its general
principles. The concept of harmony is central to Chinese medicine. The
goal of traditional Chinese medicine is to balance the human body so
it can stay in tune with the seasons and the physical environment. Internally
the organs work in unison.
The vital energy of the mind, body, and spirit flows through 12 main
pathways, each of which is associated with an organ. This vital energy
is called Qi (pronounced chee). Mental or physical illness
arise when any of these channels become blocked, or when the Qi is
deficient in any meridian. It is necessary to restore the flow of
Qi in order to treat illness.
Acupuncture is one method of re-establishing the energy. This is
done by inserting fine stainless steel needles into points along the
channels and stimulating or sedating the Qi. Acupuncture helps the
Qi flow more smoothly, relieving pain and enhancing the immune system.
We use disposable, pre-sterilized, stainless steel needles. Acupuncture
is generally painless; most people relax or fall asleep during treatments.
